Ethiopia Muslims celebrate Prophet Mohamed birthday

APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Millions of Ethiopian Muslims on Monday celebrated the 1484th birthday of Prophet Mohamed “Moulid”.

Special prayer ceremony were held at the Anwar mosque where thousands Muslims gathered for preaching and blessings.

Ethiopia Islamic Affairs Supreme Council president Sheik Ahmedin Sheik Abdulahi Chello said the faithful should celebrate the Islamic holy day by assisting the disadvantaged and upholding the culture of mutual respect and brotherhood among the peoples of the nation.

He called upon the current generation to play a leading role in reducing poverty and ensuring overall development across the nation.

Ethiopian Muslims comprise 33.9 % of the 77 million population, according to the 2008 census.

Ethiopia has a centuries-old history of Islam and is home to the first mosque in Africa, Al Negashi, located in the Tigray regional state.

Ethiopia is planning to register the mosque as a UNESCO world heritage.
