Ethiopia says terrorist plot against top government officials foiled

January 7, 2010

“Those arrested were trying to cross to Ethiopia from Eritrea via Sudan in the Amhara regional state of Ethiopia. They were given military training in Eritrea,” said the government statement.

It said the alleged terrorist attack was meant to also disturb the forthcoming national elections in Ethiopia, scheduled to be held in May 2010.

The Ethiopian federal police indicated that those arrested admitted that they were given military training in Eritrea, which is at loggerheads with Ethiopia.

The police said that they have also seized various weapons, which they said were also aimed at destroying major infrastructures in the country.

This is not the first time that Ethiopia has accused neighbouring Eritrea of planning to perpetrate such acts, which Eritrea has always denied.

The two countries are unable to resolve their border dispute for the past 11 years.
