South Africa’s would-be olim will have to fly Ethiopian Airlines
Due to a spat with El Al over its prices, the Jewish Agency has taken to
flying new immigrants from South Africa to Israel via Ethiopian Airlines, with a stop in Addis Ababa.
El Al has direct flights between Tel Aviv and South Africa and will continue to do so three times a week, even though it was supposed to stop as of Monday.
The issue was a dispute with South Africa after an El Al security man was shown on television interrogating a local ostensibly because of his skin color.
Ethiopian Airlines has long been flying immigrants from around the continent, ever since El Al stopped flying to Kenya and Nigeria for security reasons.
