EDUM and SDFC Withdraw From Forum As Members
Addis Ababa, March 1, 2010 (Addis Ababa) – The Ethiopian Democratic Unity Movement (EDUM) and the Somali Democratic Forces Coalition (SDFC), Member parties of Forum, announced here on Sunday that they withdrew from the Forum as members as a result of political pressure from the Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ).
EDUM Chairperson, Guesh Gebre-silassie, said EDUM has quit its membership from the Forum provisionally as the result of the pressure that came from the Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ), another member party of the Forum, especially on the question of the delegation of election candidates.
He told ERTA that though EDUM has its own political program, it preferred to join the coalition with an intention of struggling along with other parties.
However, he said, the repeated political pressure from UDJ, which was advised by other member parties to refrain from doing so, has forced EDUM to withdraw from the Forum for the time being.
SDFC Deputy Chairperson, Dr. Ahmed Nasir Hassen said on his part that certain parties have an ambitious desire to compete wherever they like and did not want others to contend in certain polling stations.
He further said as the result of political pressure that come from UDJ, SDFC is not supposed to contest from any polling station existing in Addis Ababa and thus, his party did not have desire to be a member of the Forum.
According to ERTA’s report, the representatives of EDUM and SDFC walked out from the Second General Assembly of the Forum that took place here on Sunday.
