Ethiopian suspends flights to five European destinations
The acting public relations manager with Ethiopian, Wogayehu Terefe, said the airlines discontinued the flights for safety reasons on Thursday night. Wogayehu added the suspension would stay in place until the situation improved.
British civil aviation authorities ordered the closing of the country’s airspace as of noon on Thursday to shield aircraft from a high altitude cloud of ash drifting south and east from erupting volcano in Iceland. The plume shut down airports and forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights in a wide arc from Ireland to Scandinavia.
Aviation experts say the rolling cloud, which is made up of particles of silicate, can damage aircraft engines. Denmark and Sweden have restricted air travel.
