EDP concludes its meeting in London successfully
Obviously, it was expected that calling a meeting in London is going to stir emotions and trigger a futile resistance to stop EDP’s high profile comeback in London. Nevertheless, it was decided that it is time that EDP starts forcefully and assert its come back in London.
Particularly, for those political groups who had been saying EDP is dead and buried; it was hard to accept this public meeting in London. But the support group decided to take campaign right in to the centre of resistance by booking the Ethiopian Community Hall in London and by inviting its dooms wishers and their supporters. Some thought that is a crazy thing to do, some even used the analogy that of Mengistu having a meeting at TPLF’s office during the conflict. EDP support group insisted in having the meeting at the Ethiopian community for good reasons.
The objectives of the meeting were two.
- First, to break a self imposed delusion of some political groups who thought they own and control London. That message could only be hammered in to their head by calling a meeting in London and asserting our views and beliefs.
- Second, objective was more gentle, which is to present EDP’s political case for Londoners and listen for their views and suggestions.
To make sure that everyone is aware thousands of fliers, emails, phone calls and text were sent to Londoners that the support group can reach. This includes the political parties like G7 and UDJ’s support groups.
As expected, this created shock as if the ghost of a political party that was declared dead and buried come back to haunt them. Immediately following this announcement a group lead by Ato Abebe Tolosa, President of UDJ’- Europe and Ato Andargachew Tsege’s group started to campaign to stop the meeting in full force. Soon it became clear that it is an impossible task to force Londoners boycott the meeting. When that was not working, some openly said it is on their dead body that EDP would have its meeting in London, particularly at Ethiopian Community in London. The tactic they used was to send public threat to beat, to kill, to kidnap and to chase EDP’s leader Ato Lidetu Ayalew and the support group and members.
They realised that that task was too ambitious when the power of balance was revealed at the meeting hall. Shouting was the safest choice left at their disposal.
This laud mouth approach and threat in fact made, EDP’s supporters to double their effort and continued with planned meeting. Every precaution was made so that the young and intelligent EDP supporters not to be caught wrestling with those without hops and dead end politicians and pick a criminal record that would destroy their career and future prospect. Even after all this precaution made one of the G7 supported clamed to have been assaulted to file a criminal charge hoping to criminalise one of the EDP supporter. Fortunately, it was fabricated.
We are living in a democratic country where the rule of law is respected. We know that they have rights to protest. So every possible precaution was taken to make sure that their plans do not exceed their usual hysterical shout, laud slogans, the usual Yleyal-Zendro tribal dance, while taking a video of themselves for their YouTube collection.
To be honest, EDP’s support group risk assessment was accurate to the last dot. As expected, they came; they shouted Leba, Banda, hodam, danced in circle in the meeting hall, till they were told they have done their usual 30 minute rituals and leave the meeting hall in peace.
As expected Ato Abebe Tolosa had many slogans, throw shouts, sang a song as duo with Ato Andargachew Tseges’ brother, Ato. Bizuneh Tsege, danced in circle saying, Yeleyal Zendro, took video clips till peacefully escorted out by British Police and two private security guards out of the hall.
It was comical, amazingly stupid and a self deprecating act. But that is what make them fulfilled in their life. Wwe took no offence.
Once they left, the meeting continued in peace till 6:30 pm discussing various issues.
EDP support group fully realised that there are many frustrated Ethiopians either with their own personal life or as a result of political adventure.. We know that they foolishly set a target that they cannot possibly commit themselves or have the physical or intellectual joie de vivre to execute it
We know it is now 3 years since the G7 leadership declare its intention to talk EPRDF in the language that it understands.
It is almost 3 years, since 500 dollar per head was collected to assist them to go and fight. It is almost 3 years, since messages were sent to warn what will happen to EDP supporters when the G7 heroic liberation army capture the capital. It was prophesied that the traitors, the hodams, the bandas had no option but to kneel down, light a candle at St. Marry’s church and pray for forgiveness from G7 wrath.
Those all fantasies did not come true. To begin with, one has to commit himself to a cause to face his enemy. Second, one need to pay a personal scarifies to achieve higher goals. Arm struggle is not a dance in circle. There is no beer, free medical care for age related alignment or the welfare state to relay on as fall back. It is a question to fight or die.
One need to be prepared to die to a cause that he is prepared to bring about. Regrettably, that determination is hard to come by. The feeling of inadequacy and impotence is hard to bear and this sense of failure has to be defuse on someone if life to become bearable. Eric Hoffer, an American philosopher wrote: “In running away from ourselves we either fall on our neighbour’s shoulder or fly at his throat”.
Further, he argues that “The lesser justified a man is in claiming excellence for his own self, the more ready is he to claim all excellence for his nation, religion, his race or his holy causes”
What else can explain the righteous indignation, a self-congratulation chanting and shouting you will see on the video clip below.
That may explain a reason behind today’s bizarre, G7 and UDJ supporters cry out of frustration. It is tragic to see our fellow citizens’ holy cause is turned in to be ritualistic chants between meals.
The audience and EDP were saddened at the same time entertained before having a fruitful discussion with the audience on many of controversial and relevant issues.
Now EDP has won its battle to capture London. The battle of the will of power has been concluded. Nothing is as satisfying as flying our flags in London and break the will of the self imposed delusion of some.
EDP is here to stay. As they say, “Yechnekew Yewta”
