Libyan government, opposition representatives to meet in Ethiopia: UN chief

March 25, 2011

The statement came as the secretary-general was speaking at an open meeting to brief the UN Security Council on the current situation of Libya.

“Tomorrow, my special envoy will travel to Addis Ababa for a meeting convened by the African Union,” Ban said. “Representatives of both the Libyan government and the opposition will attend, as well as relevant member states and regional organizations. Their aim: to reach a ceasefire and political solution.”

Ban’s special envoy, former Jordanian foreign minister Abdelilah Al-Khatib, just concluded his visit to Libya.

“The special envoy emphasized that it was in Libya’s best interest to cease hostilities and change the dynamics of the crisis,” Ban said.
