Afar’s spiritual leader dies at the age of 91

Upon returning to the country after the collapse of the Derg regime, Sultan Ali Mirah actively participated in building peace, stability and development in the country, the statement said.

The funeral of Sultan Ali Mirah, a father of 14 sons and 15 daughters, was held yesterday in the town of Assaita, his birth place, in the presence of Sheik Ahmedin Sheik Abdulahi Chello, President of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council and other federal government officials.

A host of high level government officials from Djibouti, including the prime minister, Dileita Mohamed Dileita, Defence Minister, Ougoureh Kifleh Ahmed, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, and tribal and religious leaders were also in attendance.

Sultan Ali Mirah, a great Ethiopian patriot and a pillar of the people of Afar, and historical guardian of Ethiopia’s freedom and sovereignty, will be missed by all Ethiopians that knew him and his beloved family. Sultan Ali Mirah is a great Ethiopian patriot, and I proudly attest to his dedication and love of Ethiopians, in both good and trying times.We shall undoubtdley miss his wisdom and devoted prayers for all our people
    and our country’s liberation and independence.

    May God rest his Soul in eternal peace, and my humble condolances to his family and to all my Afari friends.
