Ethiopia expels 2 Arabs amid tension with a group of Muslims

May 5, 2012

Shimeles Kemal, Ethiopia’s minister of communications, said Saturday that the two Arabs disseminated materials at the Grand Anwar Mosque in Ethiopia’s capital on Friday. Kemal did not identify which countries the two men came from, but he said they were making inflammatory statements in an effort to incite violence.

Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry on Thursday accused a group of Muslims in the Oromia region of trying to declare jihad – or holy war – against the government and inciting violence in mosques across the country.

Security forces arrested a mosque leader in Oromia on April 27, and four people were killed when a group of people tried to free the imam. Ten police were wounded in the clash.
