Ethiopia dam talks ‘a success’: Sudan minister

December 10, 2013

Sudan’s water resources minister has declared tripartite talks on Ethiopia’s dam a success.

The second set of talks involving Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia solved many problems, Motaz Moussa said at a press conference on Tuesday.

The three countries were discussing recommendations made by an international technical committee on the dam project. It was the second round of talks.

Ethiopia’s planned $4.2 billion hydroelectric dam on the Blue Nile has been a source of concern for the Egyptian government, which fears the project could negatively impact the volume of Nile water reaching Egypt. Sudan, another downstream country, could also be affected by the dam.

Moussa added that some concerns had not been tackled and would be discussed in the third round of talks planned for 4 and 5 January 2014.

Attending the conference, which began in Khartoum on Saturday, was Egyptian Water Resources Minister Mohamed Abdel-Moteleb and Ethiopia’s Water and Energy Minister Alamayo Tegno, alongside Sudan’s Motaz Moussa.
