Family members of detainees Ato Christian and Ato Yohannes report that “their pain has worsened.”
Family members of detained politicians Ato Christian Tadele and Ato Yohannes Buayalew have raised serious concerns regarding the deteriorating health of their loved ones while they remain imprisoned in Kality. According to a report by BBC Amharic, both detainees have been experiencing severe pain and complications following surgeries they underwent over two weeks ago. The family members, who requested anonymity, reported that the politicians have been suffering from continued bleeding, which has exacerbated their condition.
Despite medical advice recommending that Ato Christian and Ato Yohannes remain in the hospital for recovery, they were reportedly transported back to prison shortly after their surgeries. Family members described the conditions of their return as uncomfortable, noting that the wounds had not fully healed and that the doctors had warned of potential bleeding complications. A close relative of Ato Christian emphasized that he was still bleeding when he was returned to prison, highlighting the urgency of their medical needs.
The situation has been further complicated by the lack of adequate pain management. Family members indicated that the painkiller medication provided to the detainees has run out, as they had to take it frequently to cope with their pain. This has left them in a vulnerable state, unable to manage their discomfort effectively.
Attempts by family members to deliver food and medication to the detainees have also been met with obstacles. One family member of Ato Yohannes recounted that they were informed they could not enter the prison with painkillers, as the detainees were scheduled to be moved. This sudden change in information has left families confused and worried about the well-being of their loved ones. Similarly, a family member of Ato Christian reported that their efforts to deliver food and medicine were thwarted, as there was no one available to accept the items.
In a statement issued on December 16, 2024, the Federal Prison Commission announced plans to transfer prisoners from Kality to a facility located in the Gelan area, known as Aba Samuel. This news has added to the anxiety of the families, who are concerned about the health and safety of Ato Christian and Ato Yohannes during this transition.
