World Council of Churches Condemns Drone Strike in Ethiopia

Ethiofact — The World Council of Churches (WCC) has issued a strong statement condemning the deadly drone attack that claimed the lives of over 100 civilians, including women and children, in the town of Gedeb, Amhara region, Ethiopia.

Rev. Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay, general secretary of the WCC, expressed profound sorrow and concern over the tragedy, which occurred on 23 April 2025 during a community gathering at a local primary school. In his message, he recalled the words of Jesus: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” (Matthew 5:9)

“This atrocity adds to a growing list of similar incidents in recent months, including another devastating drone strike in 2024 that targeted civilians,” Pillay stated. He criticized the increasing use of autonomous and semi-autonomous drones in conflict settings, warning of the grave threat they pose to human dignity and the sanctity of life when international humanitarian law is disregarded.

The WCC called on all parties involved in Ethiopia’s ongoing conflicts to respect international humanitarian law, refrain from attacks on civilians, and commit to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. The organization urged both national and international actors to prioritize inclusive dialogue and peaceful solutions as the only viable paths to justice and lasting peace.

Churches and religious communities in Ethiopia were also called upon to be strong voices for justice, reconciliation, and unity during this time of deep suffering.

The WCC stands in solidarity with the victims and their families, extending heartfelt condolences to all those who are grieving. “May God comfort the brokenhearted and guide all efforts to end violence and protect life in Ethiopia and the wider region,” Pillay concluded.
